Biography


Krzysztof Szumanski is considered one of the most distinguished Polish baritones of his generation. In the current season he will appear as, Scarpia in Tosca at State Opera, Prague and Stolnik in Halka by Stanislaw Moniuszko, Zawiadowca in a worldpremiere of “Ślepy tor” by Krzysztof Meyer – Premiere at the National Opera House in Warsaw – Teatr Wielki and perform in song recitals as part of the Szumanski Duo.

From 2016 to 2018 Krzysztof was the leading baritone at Staatstheater Darmstadt. He sung roles including Bluebeard in Blueabeard Castle, the title role in Der Fliegende Holländer, Scarpia in Tosca among many other productions. Between 2008 and 2013, he was a soloist at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He also debuted at the Wexford Festival in Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Snow Maiden conducted by Dimitri Jurowski.

Krzysztof regularly appears at the Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival in Warsaw and at the Berliner Philharmonie. He is a founding member of the Szumanski / Dimkovic song project which was created with the aim to discover and present neglected and undiscovered composers in parallel to the mainstream song repertoire.

As a previous member of the prestigious Jette Parker Young Artist Programme at The Royal Opera House, Krzysztof worked with Sir Antonio Pappano, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Bernard Haitink and many other distinguished conductors. His discography includes performances for EMI records, Naxos Deutschland, CPO and Dux.
